STUDY AND ENJOY YOURSELF

In Málaga it is possible to study Spanish and to have fun-and at the same time practice the language. Here you can learn while you’re enjoying the sun and having a good time.

It is easy to combine both and make your stay at the Institute an exceedingly pleasurable experience.

MÁLAGA, NIGHTLIFE OF THE CITY

In Málaga throughout the year, but especially from April to October, the night temperature is very mild making it possible to thoroughly enjoy yourself in the company of Málaga’s youth who fill the streets, bars and discos until the early hours of the morning having a good time.

There are two areas with a special atmosphere: El Palo, where the school is located, and the old city centre where there are many bars, restaurants, some discos and disco bars.  There is nightly bus service between El Palo and the centre.

The best sources of information are the students themselves, those that have attended the school during previous courses. :

They understand perfectly where the nightlife is, where the most interesting places are and those that are currently the most popular.

THE MALAGANIAN PAINTER, PABLO PICASSO, AND ANDALUSIAN CULTURE

Picasso, that original painter and genius, was born in Málaga and spent his early years in this vibrant Mediterranean city. This beyond doubt left its mark on his life and style.

Málaga was founded more than 2000 years ago by the Phoenicians and its history has been influenced by the Romans, the Visigoths and Arabs.

Contrasted against the present day image of its tourist attractions, it must be remembered that Andalusia has been the receiver, the creator and the transmitter of culture throughout its history. In the Roman era it gave emperors and philosophers to Rome. It was a world center of art and science during the long period of Arab occupation. And, for centuries it was the port of contact with colonial America.

An historical melting-pot of cultures-the area is also the “homeland” of the Spanish gypsies-has resulted in the uniqueness of the Andalusian character.

For these reasons it is not by accident that a large number of great Spanish poets, musicians and painters are Andalusian. To give a few examples of the great Spanish figures of this century: in music, Falla; in poetry, Machado, Albertí, Garcia Lorca, ... ; in painting, Pablo Picasso.

PRINCIPAL FESTIVALS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES

THE FAIR, that is held in August and lasts for eight days, is, together with that of Seville, one of the most important fairs in Spain.  It is an impressive event highlighting the colourful dress of the gypsies and of the country folk.  An extraordinary festive atmosphere pervades the city during the day and by night is transferred to the Fairgrounds on the outskirts of the city.

HOLY WEEK is, once again along with that in Seville, one of the most important in the country.  During the entire week before Easter, processions solemnly file through the streets until the early hours of the morning.  The complete popular involvement by the city residents and the accompanying atmosphere make this a remarkable experience and a unique spectacle.

SAN JUAN, the night of the 23rd of June, which coincides with the summer solstice, is the night this event takes place.  A popular local tradition, it predates Christianity and includes bonfires on the beach where allegorical figures are burnt, people go swimming and jump through the bonfires.  There are also many barbecues and beach parties making this an important local custom in Málaga.

THEATRE, -- There is also an important International Theatre Festival that takes place in the streets and public squares of Málaga as well as in its Cervantes Theatre.  This theatre also presents a season of opera, and throughout the year it is the venue for concert programs given by the “City of Málaga” Symphonic Orchestra.

MODERN MUSIC CONCERTS, - Especially during the summer, there are frequent large concerts presented by important groups and soloists in rock, pop and other music genres.  These are held in the port, or in the Málaga bullring while some are held in nearby Marbella.

FLAMENCO,-- Logically, because Málaga is in Andalusia, festivals featuring the most important figures in Flamenco music are held in the city and various other towns and villages in the province.
